who chooses team captain ?

What kind of team are we talking about.  With a senior recreational team, I let the team choose the  team captain.  With the current youth team (13-14 year old), I'm coaching, I give every-one a turn for 2 weeks.  The captains gets clear instructions and gains in this way some experience on 'leading' the team.  From this I get a good feeling also of the natural leaders, from which I can pick in the comming years a captain.

I would agree with Alain except for senior team I have a coaching panel set up for the 4 teams that i manage the panel chooses the captian, the team will choose the vice captain.

I coach 10/11 year old girls, and the player of the day is next weeks captain. The captains duties for our games  are fairly simple -to do the toss for ends, to lead the team onto the Turf and get in a huddle and lead the pre game "war cry" and to lead the team for the post game opposition hand shake. They take turns at getting player of the day ( I like the two week idea, how to implement in my case though) In case youre wondering, I have also created a skills award, where the parents (take turns week about) tally skills on a "player vs table of (various) skills" sheet and the player with the most skills employed by the end of the game gets the skills award, which gets a bit more emphasis or kudos given (by the coaches enthusiasm) than the Player of the day (And the certicate is twice as big, but the chocolate fish are the same size). Worked well because previously  I despaired for the skills we were practising at practise but not using during the game. Also the parents got on side when they had their turn at Tallying and discovered what I was trying to achieve... Later in the season  I could hear parents calling out who had done what skills while another parent was busy tallying. Also gets them to watch the game rather than the usual social catch up (back ground noise).
