I'm preparing for next season and new recruits?

I'm preparing for next season with some off season session plans for my team.

I will probably have a 2 hour slot to look at new players for the season.

There will be players of all abilities so my question is ... What are some of the recommended approaches to evaluating these new recruits?

I can run then through an actual training session and see if they can handle it but I don't want to discourage players from coming out.

Also just to make things a little more interesting it will be a coed session.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Coed would be awesome all though seperate would be better in the beginning i think.

use the warm up session to make most of your "player" choices. If they can't even pass in warm ups you'll know who goes where. From that point I have found that some of your players that have never played will have some "natural" ability and learn quickly from others. example, I had a new member of my Y team, hed never touched a volleyball before and within a season she played club, made her school team "A" 7th grade as a setter.

seperating boys and girls to me would be easier, the boys will tend to watch video and try to emulate like "we" did back in the day.

Other than that you need lots of eyes. the special ones or good ones will stand out the others are all entitled to what you can teach them.

yeah i tend to think the same as to James in regard to Coed.  it may start ok, but in the end its just a distraction to both sexes.

returning players, you should already know where they are at, so you dont have to push them too hard.  go for a mid field approach, that is easy to pic those that are new, and need a lot of work, and those that are naturals.

once you have a basic idea, then split them up into groups and see how much you can push them.  your stars will shine, and those with potential will lag, but not give up.

if you want, once you have got your basic groups you could have a coed game at the end for some fun.
