Drill:

Core concepts:

To pass accurately and move the ball across the line as quickly as possible without dropping it.

Possible uses:

  • Warm up drill
  • Pressure passing
  • Fitness and endurance

Set Up:

  • Work in a grid/area that is appropriate for the age and ability of the players
  • Set the 'half backs' at 5m interval.
  • The passing players line up laterally approx. 2/3m apart and slightly staggered.

Drill:

  • Player 1 passes the ball to player 2, player 2 passes to player 3 and moves forward to collect the next pass from player 6 etc.
  • Player 1 loops round behind and collects the ball from player 5 and puts it on the floor
  • Player 6 passes the ball to player 2 etc.
  • Player 7 passes the ball to player 2 etc.
  • Player 6 passes the ball to player 2 etc.
  • Once the final pass has been received, the players turn around and run the drill in the opposite direction
  • Rotate players as appropriate

Key Factors:

Stance:
  • Outside foot forward to encourage the player to run straight and not drift.
  • Hands reaching out towards the ball to take the ball early.
Hand speed:
  • Take the ball early.
  • Look for the target.
  • Move the ball across the body quickly
  • Quick feet to support the movement of the ball.
Accuracy:
  • Pass at the target/hands.
  • Target area between the waist and chest.
  • The speed and catchability of the pass is dictated by the distance between the passer and the receiver.
Follow through :
  • Hands follow the ball and 'point' at the target.
  • Once the ball is released the passer must foucs on the next pass

Progressions:

  • 6 man passing drill
  • Increase distance of the pass
  • Decrease the distance of the pass
  • Reduce the distance between the 'half backs' to increase the pressure on the passers
  • Build in shuttles. i.e. continuous passing from both sides
  • Add a time factor. i.e. as many passes from both sides within a given time period (without dropping the ball).
