I have an attacking goal defender and every time she manages to intercept the ball she gets pulled up for contact whether she has contacted or not. I dont want to change her style of play. what can I do to help her in this situation.
Well i have a player with the same problem, very annoying when umpires cant tell a contact from a clean intercept. I wouldnt change her way, she is obviously a strong defence player and can read the ball. Maybe get your captain to talk to the umpires on what she is seeing. unfortunatley some umpires dont let contesting for the ball go especially with defences, as they would in a ANZ tournament shame Good Luck, or a more experienced umpire.
Hi, I would talk to the umpires after the game to see what their perspective is. If you know a qualified umpire, ask if they could come and watch a game. Without actually seeing the player, it is hard to define why she might be pulled up continually for the same offence. There may be a couple of reasons for the penalty. My major thought for her contact would be that she is some how interfering with play, or looks as if she is. If she is good a reading play, then she will need to adjust her distance from opponents when making an intercept. It sounds as if she is reacting off the opposition when making the intercept.
Hi, as both a coach and an umpire I would encourage your team captain to go to the umpires at a break and ask the question..."Could you please clarify the ruling on fair contest for the ball in defence". This should clear up the isssue of what the umpire is calling, as in the end, the players must learn to adjust to the umpires. Good luck.
