Keeping possesion of turnover ball

Keeping possesion of turnover ball

Any ideas on how to teach a senior team to cherish and convert turnover balls they create?

im assuming you mean that they intercept the ball and then just throw the pass away to the other team.  they are just rushing the pass.  remind them that they have 3 seconds to pass and to use that time.  make sure the rest of the team are giving each other good passing options, by spreading out and driving into space.  to practise turnovers, try teaming the girls up 2 on 2 or 3 on 3, and just do a passing exercise in a defined area, and half the players are attack and the other are defence.  while they are attackers they are just driving into space and passing, but when there is a turn over they instantly switch roles.  there is no goals, just passing, defense and intercepts.  that should help your problem.

Hi Lee-anne Yes your assumption is absolutely correct. Thankyou for taking time out to reply with your answer, However they have done that drill numerous times already and it has improved their turnover possesion rate but not enough to win games in their premier 1 grade. They are just falling short by a few goals to win crutial matches. Turnover Possestion from what i can see is the only thing they lack in. 95% of their centre pass ball is converted successfully but any extra ball unfortunately is not. These girls are Athletic,Energetic and have worked hard to earn their spot in the top level of our local organisation. They are the only college team playing up @ that level. I cant help but feel like im letting them down as a coach when they do not get the wins they so deserve. Feels like iv hit a brick wall...Any advice will be much appreciated. Thankyou for your time = )

sounds like they are doing really well as a team, and if they are that close to the top teams, maybe its just a matter of time and maturity til they are all completely insinc with each other.  at this level all the teams deserve to be there, and maybe right at this moment all the teams are playing at the best of their ability, and as a coach their may not be anything more that you arent already doing.  try watching some of the silver fern or diamond games and see what they do when they get a turn over.  are they doing anything different to your team?  sometimes its just that the other team is just better, but your team will get its time if they keep working hard, and dont lose heart.  the want for that ball, could be the difference.  they obviously want it to get a change over, but maybe that focus is lost, even a fraction, once they have it.  it might have nothing to do with skill, it might have more to do with mindset.

Most of the prem 1 teams in our region have played together for many years and yes i think your right, more game time together will deff strengthen them and yes their time will come! Great advice thankyou very much = )
