How do I get my team of inexperienced under 8's to move the ball faster through the game?
netta girls can be the most frustrating and yet rewarding group to coach. it takes a lot of patience, but an understanding that if they are inexperienced, and young, then maybe just concentrate on the basics of passing, footwork, balance, and catching.
i have seen some good coaches use a basic line of girls down the court where they have to basically catch and pivot to throw to get the ball down the court. once they are doing that confidently then zig zag them down the center of the court and have them one by one run and catch pivot throw down the center of the court. make sure that each pass is court balanced, then a strong pivot, and a good throw. also make sure the person isnt breaking too early, but at this age it might be a bit much to ask of most. you can use markers or hoops to indicate where they are to catch the ball and run to.
at the end of the day, concentrate on improving their basics and maybe next year when they have those skills more honed then work on spreading out and running onto the ball more. have fun.
I have thought up a drill to combat this very problem. Get the girls to form a circle so their fingertips are just touching. Start with one ball and get the girls to receive the ball, pivot, and place the ball into the hands of next girl. Straight passes and pivoting being the first step. Introduce a second ball to the circle, do not let the second ball catch up with the first ball.Get the girls to take a step out to make the circlt bigger, same drill but passing straight and fast with a pivot. Change directions, switch the girls around so they are catching and receiving from different players. If the girls pick it up quickly add another ball.I hope this helps, you could use this drill as a warm up.
